5°CThis itinerary on foot exploring First World War sites in the Gemona area is an evocative voyage back in time, the highlight of which is the rare (or valuable) Fort of Monte Ercole.

The Fort of Monte Ercole was built as part of a defence system that was meant to protect the border between the former Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Completed in 1913, the fort played an important role during the Great War, but it was blown up by the Kingdom of Italy's own army at the end of October 1917 after the fall of Caporetto. It houses trenches, military stations and even cannons of the period.
TRIVIA- not far from the Fort, there is Sella di Sant'Agnese, one of the film sets of Mario Monicelli’s masterpiece 'The Great War'
